Lynbrook High School students Erica and Matthew DeMichiel collected over 120 new children’s books at multiple sites in Lynbrook and East Rockaway on behalf of First Book-Long Island, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing new books to children from low-income households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The group’s mission is to instill a love of reading in youngsters who would not otherwise have access to books in their homes.

For many students around the country, Jan. 18 was a day to sleep-in, play, and enjoy a day-off from school. But for a group of 65 students from the Waldorf School of Garden City (along with their parents, teachers, and friends from Adelphi University’s men’s lacrosse team) the holiday was an opportunity to serve their community and honor the life and teachings of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
