In past years, Republicans have hit Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg, a Democrat from Merrick, hard, attempting in any and all ways possible to oust him from office, including a slew of mean-spirited, factually incorrect fliers. This year, thankfully, the race for the 19th Legislative District seat has been quieter thus far. We can thank Denenberg's opponent, Republican John Podolski, for that.
Podolski is a longtime volunteer with the Bellmore Fire Department who's running a clean campaign. That, however, is not reason enough for us to endorse him.
Denenberg is among the most active, respected members of the Nassau Legislature who goes out of his way - way out of his way - to help his constituents. On average, he holds two to three community meetings per month to keep residents informed about critical issues. He even pays for a district office in Bellmore so constituents do not have to schlep to Mineola to meet with him. None of this is required of him. Now that's dedication.
Moreover, Denenberg is right on the issues. He's a fiscal conservative who has worked diligently over the years to rein in county spending and balance the budget, keeping taxes level.
He's also an environmentalist. Denenberg has sponsored more than 20 pieces of conservation legislation. He also authored both of the county's environmental bonds, totaling $150 million, which will buy up green space.
Finally, Denenberg has done an outstanding job of securing county funding to fix up aging roads and downtowns. He said his office actively pursues funding as it becomes available.
We liked Podolski. He is, quite clearly, committed to his community. He is, as he says, the voice of the "regular guy." We, however, see no reason to unseat Denenberg.
