With an extra dock, another 25-30 boats can be stored at the Inwood Marina. According to the Town of Hempstead, there is a 20-foot space limit for each boat, and there has been more demand to hold more boats at the marina.
The added dock space will answer a need that has been expressed to us by residents, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said. With the additional dockage, we will be able to house additional boats and accommodate some larger boats which has become more important as some of the smaller marinas in the area have closed.
Another aspect of this project is the building of a barrier, known as a breakwater, that will slow down the velocity of the waves as they come to the marina. This will help reduce any damage to the boats caused by waves from Motts Basin hitting the boats at high speeds. According to the Town of Hempstead, this was also causing increased flippage to the boats.
The project will not commence until the Town of Hempstead receives a permit from the Department of Environment Conservation. According to town officials, that wont happen for about 12 months. The town estimates that this work will be useful for at least 20 years.
This project will serve a dual purpose," Murray said. "Most importantly, if we receive DEC approval for the breakwater, it will serve as added protection for the boats who dock at the Inwood Marina.
