The 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Avenue School kicked off its year-long celebration with a bang last Wednesday as students, teachers, dignitaries and alumni gathered on the school steps to commemorate the school and its 10 decades as a home to education in Valley Stream.
The entire school was involved in the celebration, as the flutists from the band and the orchestra played renditions of the ³Star Spangled Banner² and ³God Bless America,² while other students waived miniature America Flags. Students also gave thanks to their school by singing Happy Birthday to the 100-year-old building.
State Assemblyman Robert Barra, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Valley Stream Mayor Ed Cahill, District 24 Board of Education President Anthony Iadevaio and Vice President Paul DePace were on hand for the celebration. Each had kind words for the students and staff, lauding the school staff for its dedication and passion for teaching, which has made District 24 one of the best school districts.
³Though this building was built in the past, the teachers here are looking toward the future,² Barra said.
Former Brooklyn Avenue School principal Bruce Alster was also there for the ceremony and participated in the re-dedication of the landmark school bell, which has hung in the belfry for 67 years. Alster said it is the staff¹s love of children that allows them to do what they do best, which is teach. Alster misses the staff and students, but wonders how the school can ever forget him.
³Doesn¹t B.A.S. stand for Bruce Alster School?² Aslter joked.
A jovial mood filled the air during the celebration as the clouds cleared, the sun shined and smiles were seen on students, staff and parents¹ faces. Alumni of all ages were in attendance, celebrating the century mark of the elementary school with coffee and birthday cake.
