The Malverne School District mailed brochures to residents, outlining expenditures in every category of the school¹s day-to-day operations. Also included in the brochure are an explanation of Proposition 2 and a list of all the eligible candidates running for election to the school board.
Increases in school spending are partly due to contractual obligations with staff and state requirements to hire an outside auditor. The tax levy increase mirrors the budget increase with a percentage of 5.28.
The new fiscal year will call for one additional teacher at each elementary school and additional staff for the middle and high school to meet enrollment needs. The budget was also designed to accommodate the replacement of both elementary school playgrounds. If the budget passes, the school district will be able to maintain the summer school and recreation programs, as well as continue staff development programs to help teachers serve the students more effectively.
The district continued to curb budget increases through its shared services and cooperative agreements. The proposed budget was made possible by Malverne¹s cost-sharing initiatives with other school districts for transportation, custodial supplies, athletic teams, workers compensation, fuel oil and accounting services.
The polling station will be at the Howard T. Herber Middle School gymnasium. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. The ballot will call for a vote on Proposition 1 (the budget) Proposition 2 (the capital project fund) and two seats for Board of Education trustee. Patrick Coonan will be challenging incumbent Phyllis Wright. Three candidates: Gina Gentilella (Genti), Andrea Cheatham and Lori Stanislaus will be running for the seat vacated by Gregory Padmore after his April resignation.
