Jay's World Childhood Center Foundation had been dedicated to raising funds to benefit children diagnosed with cancer and to help support the fight against the disease since it was founded in 1994.`The foundation was created after the Napolitano's son, Jason (Jay), was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1993. Thanks to groundbreaking research and treatments, Jason is currently in remission. The generous $50,000 donation to Winthrop was raised during the foundation's Eighth Annual Top Gun 3-vs.-3 Basketball Tournament in 2002. The tournament, now in its ninth year, is the foundation's major fund-raiser, supporting a number of childhood cancer organizations, as well as funding the Jay's World Childhood Cancer Scholarship program, which has awarded nearly 50 seniors with college scholarships since 1998. Funds raised through the tournament also helped to open a state-of-the-art CBC blood lab at Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids in 2001, allowing children to be treated for cancer and other blood-related disorders to have their blood tested immediately."Since we started the Foundation, we have raised more than $850,000 to help support childhood cancer programs in the area," Ralph Napolitano said. "This year, our goal is to reach the one million dollar milestone and thanks to the generosity of the Long Island community, I know we will make it."The Ninth Annual Top Gun Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, at North Shore High School in Glen Head. Men and women, boys and girls from ages eight to 60+ are welcome to participate in the day of fun and basketball. A donation of $150 will register a team of four. The foundation donates 95 percent of the proceeds from the tournament to fight childhood cancer. For more information on the Top Gun Basketball Tournament, contact Jay's World Childhood Cancer Foundation at (516) 671-7410 or visit www.jaysworld.org.
Chiropractic care and allergies
Spring is right around the corner and for most of us it means warmer days, the birds chirping and oh yes, lots of flowers and pollen. To some that's a nightmare. It means stuffy noses, itchy eyes and sneeze after sneeze. Wouldn't it be nice to not have to worry about that?Well forget the drugs and the side effects. Beat your allergies naturally without all of the side effects. One of the ways you can do this is to receive chiropractic care. Nerves that leave the top of your neck through your spine enter your sinuses and help them function properly. That is to say they help the cells of your sinuses work properly to keep mucus moving so you don't become stuffy. Slight skull movements performed by some chiropractors actually help to bring more blood to the sinuses in order to help them work properly. It is also important to make sure your nerve supply to your spleen and thymus is at an optimal level. Your spleen and thymus are the two glands that overreact to the allergens that have been inhaled and cause a global immune response in your body such as sneezing, watery eyes and stuffy nose. A chiropractor can check to see that they are receiving proper nerve supply and not being overstimulated. With regards to supplements, there are many that act as a natural antihistamine as well as a natural anti-inflammatory. A pineapple extract called Bromelain works wonderfully as a natural anti-inflammatory. There are several natural extracts that work great as natural antihistamines and they are as follows: Quercitin Dihydrate, Stinging Nettle Leaf and N-Acetylcysteine.Vitamin C and water in proper doses also act as a natural antihistamine. It is advised to ask your doctor if these products can benefit you, as some people may need different doses.
