A blessing of animals at Rockville Centre's United Church

Posted

The first Sunday of October is traditionally the day of worship set aside on the Christian calendar to celebrate the birthday of St. Francis, protector of animals.

Animals brought to participating churches receive a special blessing. Pictured here are some parishioners of the United Church of Rockville Centre with their pets. The blessing of the animals followed a brief ceremony and hymn.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Gunn, far left in the photo holding his dog, Jessye, blessed each animal. He placed his hands on the animal’s head, and said:  May you receive God’s blessing as you bring joy and comfort to your family and may your family always protect you and the animals of God’s kingdom.”

From left are participants Kevin Oldis with Violet, Susan Oldis with Milo, Brigette Ermansons with Arthur, Susan Hodge with Hope and Isabel Ramsdel, whose many animals were blessed in absentia.
