A call to be heard in Rockville Centre

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, left, and Mayor Fran Murray joined South Shore Ostomy Support Group Leader Lois Dunwoody to proclaim Oct. 6 “World Ostomy Day” to raise awareness for the life-saving surgery and support for those who have had it, friends, family and caregivers.

During World Ostomy Day, support group organizations, ostomy supply manufacturers and members of the medical community will hold special events including fairs, open houses, picnics and educational meetings in an effort to inspire, motivate and spotlight the active and rewarding life made possible through living with an ostomy.

There are more than 700,000 people with ostomies in the United States, and more than 100,000 ostomy surgeries are performed each year. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer and familial polyposis are among the medical conditions that can result in ostomy surgery. Visit www.ostomy.org to learn more about the procedure and World Ostomy Day.
