A do-over for the Courtesy

After the Sept. 6 public hearing at which Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray proposed to the town board the adoption of a condemnation map, the town had 90 days to post its legal notice on two consecutive days. The town submitted its order to Newsday on Nov. 30, to be printed Dec. 2 and 3. The notice ran only on Dec. 3. Newsday cited a ³clerical error² as the cause of the setback.
Another public hearing must be held to get the condemnation process back on track, but Trenkle said there was still plenty of support for it, especially given the results of the recent blight study done by Saccardi and Schiff Inc., a planning and development consulting group.
³The condemnation is going to be done in conjunction with the blight study, which will give it more oomph,² Trenkle said. ³Now, they are not going to just re-do the condemnation process with just the Supreme Court decision [Kelo v. City of New London] to support [the idea that local governments can condemn property for private development], but also the blight study, which will give [the condemnation] even more backbone.²
As of Monday, a date had not been set for the new hearing, but Trenkle suspected that it would be sometime this month. A meeting to pick the date of the public hearing was scheduled to take place this week.
