"The weather is still a little brisk and invigorating during long walks on our many trails. Peering through the branches of deciduous trees not yet full of leaves provides unique views of Westbury House, the Thatched Cottage, and the many amazing gardens that are just beginning to bloom."The Woodland Walk, above East Lake, is an especially fascinating spot, according to Carol E. Large, Old Westbury Gardens President and CEO. "The real story this time of year is in the wildflower walk. We have 40 years of bulbs reproduced there." One of the most striking, she noted, is the bright orange Fritellia, which weeps over and hangs down. Among the other wildflowers, are thousands of daffodils, crocuses and snow drops. "This is truly a beautiful time, when we get the earliest blooms," Large said. Flowers, such as daffodil and hyacinth, primrose, English daisy, pansies and wildflowers in the Woodland Walk are ready to burst forth, while the fruit trees and other trees and shrubs will be soon blooming an array of delicate colors. Visitors can enjoy it all quietly by themselves or with a master gardener, during a "Wildflower Walk" on Saturday. When the dogs have seen enough flowers, they might want to try some doggie games. The Ladies Kennel Association of America sponsors Canine Good Obedience Tests on Saturday, one of the highlights of the day. Dogs -- and companions -- also enjoy the agility demonstrations and games. "It's all good fun," noted Large. "The dogs get to socialize and everyone has a good time." Local animal welfare and rescue groups are on hand, including Grateful Greyhounds, Little Shelter, and Long Island Sheepdog Rescue. They'll provide information about dog care, training and adoption. Westbury House, the Charles II-style mansion that is the former home of the Phipps family is, of course, ready for spring, as well. It opens its doors with a guided tour, and musical performance featuring Artists-In-Residence Poetica Musica, in a "Celebration of Czech Music, at 8 p.m. A pre-concert talk starts off the program, at 7:30 p.m., with a meet-the-artists reception following the concert. Ticket are $25, 20 for members. Reservations are required.Old Westbury Gardens is open weekends throughout April. Upcoming events include Talk and Tour" on the "Primrose Path," when visitors can experience the beauty of the primrose in full bloom; a leisurely stroll through Westbury House in celebration of St. George's Day, devoted to England's patron saint, with a view of Georgian Era treasures; and an Arbor Day tree dedication ceremony.
