Scarpato and his wife, Virginia, are moving to Vermont in a few weeks. They have already sold their home on Hawthore Street.
Scarpato served as the mayor of Lynbrook from 1995 to 2007. Legislator Francis Becker, East Rockaway Mayor Ed Sieben, Councilman Anthony Santino, former Rockville Centre Mayor Eugene Murray, Assemblyman Bob Barra and former village administrator Carol Hansen, among others, were on hand to thank Scarpato for his work in the village and wish him good luck in his new home.
Barra presented Scarpato with a flag ,and credited Scarpato for helping mold him into the official he is today. Santino said that even though current Lynbrook Mayor Brian Curran is doing a good job as mayor, it will be a long time before he thinks of anyone else other than Scarpato when he hears the words Lynbrook and mayor.
Scarpato was given numerous awards and citations during the ceremony, but he credited his wife as one of the driving forces in his life. With the utmost modesty, he deflected all the praise he was receiving onto those that helped him during his 12-year tenure as Lynbrook's mayor. Curran even asked Scarpato to take the mayor's seat on the board for one last time, and close out the evening's board meeting.
