Sponsored this year by Judge Frank A. Gulotta Lodge #2180 Order Sons of Italy in America, the Frolic was a rousing success, according to Grist Mill Museum Co-Chairwoman Carol Ferretti. "We want to thank the community for their support, first of all," she said. "And of course, those who participated with a booth or table at the fair, those who donated time and money, or who just helped to make the day a great one."
More than 500 people visited the museum, which is on the grounds of the park, during the Frolic. "We had a very big attendance in the museum itself," said Ferretti. Residents love to see the artifacts and antiques that made this village what it is today."
The day kicked off with a parade into Memorial Park, followed by the Western Long Island Detachment Marine Color Guard's salute to the flag. State Sen. Dean Skelos greeted the crowd, as did Hempstead Town Councilman and East Rockaway resident Anthony Santino, Supreme Court Appellate Judge Thomas Adams, Mayor Joseph Carrigan and village trustees. Monsignor Bill Jablonski of St. Raymonds and the Rev. Mark Lukens of Bethany Church offered words of inspiration.
The Beautiful Baby Contest was a hit, with prizes awarded in three age categories -- and a surprise visit from "Sesame Street's" Elmo to delight the children.
The lineup for the third annual Idol talent show included local singers, dancers and gymnasts. The Rio Jitsu Do Academy gave a martial arts demonstration, and square dance caller Primo Fiore had youngsters and senior citizens together on the dance floor swinging, promenading, and do-si-do-ing their partners in circles.
"There are so many people to thank for the delicious refreshments, the beautiful craft tables, the fun games, rides and more," said Ferretti. "I especially want the Masons for their free children's video ID program that ran during the day in the Senior Center." Music was provided by FM DJs.
"The weather cooperated, as well as everything else," said Ferretti. "We couldn't have asked for a better day."
