For the last twenty years, Long Beach Medical Center has been trying to reach the community more intimately by providing an annual health fair on the boardwalk. Distracted by the cry of seagulls, or the crashing waves, people generally paused at the various tables, maybe took a pamphlet, but rarely stayed long enough to fully benefit from the various screenings that the hospital offered.
This year, the Long Beach Medical Center gambled by using a new approach, and they struck gold.
The Boardwalk Family Health Festival billed itself as an opportunity to benefit from free health screenings and enjoy fun in the sun. On Sunday, July 15, hundreds of people did just that. The crowd was mixed, but unlike other years, many families were drawn to the tables, lured by the music of the DJ, free balloons, and free carnival type games.
