More than 50 local residents attended the second annual “Remembrance Baby Shower” held by Josephine and Robert Detz, at their home on Mosefan Street in Franklin Square, on Feb. 19. The Detzes host the event in honor of their daughter, Susan Ambrosino of Franklin Square, who was murdered nearly seven years ago.
On Feb. 24, 2005, Ambrosino (formerly Susan Detz), was shot and killed by her then-boyfriend, Steven Schiovone, 35, of Levittown, while the two were sitting inside of Ambrosino’s vehicle in Queens. Ambrosino was 26 years old, and several months pregnant with a son, Gerard, when she was killed.
In 2007, Schiovone pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges. According to the family, he allegedly killed Ambrosino in an attempt to conceal that he was the father of her unborn child. Ambrosino was formerly married to Schiovone’s half-brother, Keith Ambrosino of Elmont, the father of Ambrosino’s first child, Taylor Ambrosino, 16. Keith and Susan had divorced several years prior to her murder.
Hundreds of items were donated during the baby-shower fundraiser last week. According to Detzes, some items will be given to six women who recently gave birth at Mercy Hospital, and the rest of the donations will be taken to local shelters. Year-round, Josephine said, she receives baby items donated by local residents, which are taken to the Mercy Medical Centers Obstetrics and Pediatric Department, as well as various Long Island shelters.
