A Long Island classic

Posted
Last week's competition went right down to the wire. Champions Tour golfers Jim Thorpe and Bob Gilder slugged it out, with Thorpe squeaking out a victory in the end.
He finished 15 under, with Gilder a close second at 14 under. Gilder had a chance to tie it and force a playoff on the 18th hole, when he failed to hit sink a six-foot putt.
Thorpe took home $225,000 of the $1.5 million purse.
This was the first time the Long Island Classic was held on the refurbished Red Course in Eisenhower and the first time a Professional Golfers' Association tournament was played there since 1926. Some 82 golfers competed in the classic.
From all accounts, the pros liked the course, and there's a chance the tournament will be played there next year.
