A new year, a new you, a new me

Living, thriving with challenges — a quest to be healthy, happy in the new year

In 2011 I shared with you some of the challenges that most disabled people have to face in their everyday lives. I explained what we face in our relationships, our communities and our jobs. Today I would like to share with you my incredible journey as I overcome some of my trials.

When I go to my day habilitation program, I help my peers by being supportive and being a good friend to them. It’s important for me to motivate others and to let them know that they are capable of reaching new skills and new goals. I encourage others to be all that they can be. With hard work, we can all learn and be successful — just like everyone else.I have joined the Values Committee Board at Life Worc, along with some of the staff who hold a variety of different positions at the main office. I represent all peers from all day habilitations. It’s great hearing what other representatives have to say. I feel honored to be with them. This has being a great opportunity for me to represent others, to advocate for myself, and to interview many different varieties of people, from CEO’s to founders of different companies and even political figures.

With Life Worc, I have been honored to go to a gala and saw how the organization, along with Qsac and other contributors, came together to help the Family Centre of Autism.

I’d also like to share that I have kept the same job for the past 10 years and have impeccable reviews. Even when old coworkers leave and new ones come into our little work family, we always adjust — even with a new boss! Working at my present job has allowed me to improve my ability to handle money, and also taught me to collaborate with others to get the job done.

I have also been improving on my quest of staying healthy so I’ve been taking Crossfit at Crossfit Seize the Day in Rockville Centre or working out independently and in group settings. I think it’s a new challenge where I push myself each time and each day to reach new limits.

This year, I have improved in my ability to navigate the public transportation system. With the support of my parent and other support staffs, I have been taking the train, the subway and the bus to different areas of my neighborhood and also traveling outside of my community. As I met new people and explored places, I got new ideas for several columns that I have written for the company’s newsletters, for articles in the Herald, and restaurant review for Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (known as Lady Gaga.) I wrote a restaurant review for her parents about the amazing job that their waiters do at the eatery and I wrote about they provide really good food.

The more I push myself the more I understand that the sky is the limit. All of my achievements have set me closer to my new goal — which is to possibly move out and be on my own.
