The package was sent to Albany this past winter, said Lou Frontario, assistant superintendent. The plan calls for new shingles on the roof at School 3, a repavement of 10 tennis courts at Oceanside High School, and the construction of 4 classrooms at School 8.
"As soon as we get state approval for the projects we can put them out to bid and do the work," said Superintendent Dr. Herb Brown. "But the plans have been sitting up in Albany for months and we are hoping to get approval soon."
At the school board meeting on May 13, Frontario reported that the district's architects were able to separate the School 3 roofing job from the package to get that project approved sooner than the others.
"We know that we can get that job done over this summer," Frontario told the Herald. "We can do that job as soon as school closes. If we don't do that this summer, then we wont get it done [this year]. Tennis courts can be done anytime, weather permitting."
The new roof will cost an approximate $97,000, and the reconstruction of the tennis courts, which in addition to the resurfacing will include a restriping and new fencing (for the nets), will cost an estimated $415,000. The construction of the 4 new classrooms, which will add about 3,000 square feet to School 8, is exected to cost approximately $1,385,000.
"That classrooms project is what's probably bogging down the approval of these items," Frontario said. "The paperwork requirements for adding the classrooms are more involved. If we would get approval, we could send it out for bid and break ground maybe in September or October."
