A sweet idea

Lynbrook bakery teams up with Chemo Comfort

Cupcakes are delicious, sweet and filling — and when raising money for a worthwhile non-profit organization that benefits people in need, it can also be a fulfilling treat. During the week of June 2, one Lynbrook bakery is giving residents a chance to fill up on cupcakes while also raising money and awareness for a cause that touches everyone.

The Sweet Peace on Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook has teamed up with Chemo Comfort, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, for the first-ever Cupcakes for Comfort event.

Three bakeries, one from Lynbrook and two from Greenwich Village, are participating in the week-long event where bake shops design individual cupcakes and donate 100 percent of proceeds from the week of sales to Chemo Comfort.

Allison Shapiro opened The Sweet Peace, a bakery that specializes in custom cakes for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, birthdays and any other occasion for an extravagant cake, three years ago. She is a graduate of Lynbrook High School and has a background as a pastry chef and a master’s degree in art therapy and restoration.

“It’s an organization close to everybody’s heart here,” she said of Chemo Comfort. “We’ve all had personal experiences [with loved ones battling cancer], so it’s something that I’m nothing but proud of.”

Anne Marie Paolucci, the founder of Chemo Comfort and a two-time cancer survivor, said she reached out to The Sweet Peace after learning of the bakery through one of her organization’s volunteers. Paolucci said Shapiro and her staff were very enthused about participating, which makes the event more exciting.

Paolucci and her team came up with the idea for Cupcakes for Comfort a few months ago as a way to raise money and awareness toward what their organization does.

Chemo Comfort, which became a 501(c)3 organization in 2003, provides a unique kit containing items that help ease side effects of chemotherapy. The kits are filled with items that Paolucci found useful while she was undergoing chemotherapy and include teas and crystallized ginger for nausea, a meditation CD and a Blank Book for journaling or keeping track of medical information and symptoms.
