The Lynbrook Police Department reported the arrest of Michael Richard, 23, of Lynbrook, on Feb. 23 on charges of attempting to rob the Astoria Federal Savings Bank on Merrick Road. According to Police Chief Joseph Neve, the suspect entered the bank at 10 that morning and made a deposit to his personal account.
At about 2:25 p.m., Richard returned, this time to make a withdrawal. "The suspect approached the teller window and withdrew $40 from his account," said Neve. "Before he left, he handed the teller a small piece of paper, which she thought was garbage, so she threw it away."
According to Neve, Richard pointed out to the teller that she hadn't read the note, and then left the bank. Once he was outside the building, the teller retrieved the note and discovered that it read, "Give me all your money." The teller alerted the teller manager, who notified the bank's security, which contacted the Nassau County Police Department Robbery Squad.
"The robbery squad notified us, and Lynbrook police secured the crime area," said Neve. "An investigation led to the subject's identity and address, and subsequently his employer."
Lynbrook police officer Joseph Cipolla arrested Richard at his place of work, Precision Auto on East Merrick Road in Valley Stream, a short time later, Neve reported. "Richard was brought to the Nassau County Police Robbery Squad for further investigation and booking," said Neve. "He did not resist arrest."
