South Side High School’s Best Buddies Club joined the Friendship Walk on May 12 to support local Best Buddies inclusion programs.
The walk is a day to celebrate the mission of Best Buddies and to celebrate the new friendships made throughout the years. The event also educates the public on the need for social inclusion and to empower people with IDDs to become leaders in the community.
Adam Moss, the incoming president of South Side High School's Best Buddies Club and his buddy Andrew Zaffos held the ribbon for the walk to begin. The boys are youth board members for the Long Island chapter. Adam raised $1,500 for his team. As a team, South Side High School students raised $4,500 — $1,500 of which was raised by Adam. Overall the walk was a huge success — the Long Island chapter raised more that $30,000.
"The support from local businesses, friends and family is truly heartwarming" said Adam whose aunt resides in a group home.
"My Aunt Ellen currently works for Meals on Wheels. Ellen understands the importance of helping others in need and is proud of her efforts to make sure people in our community receive nutritious meals and the human connection they need to help them live independently. She inspires me every day."
