In a collaboration between the South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Scott Jackson Wiley and Leggz Ltd. Dance, under the Artistic Direction of Joan MacNaughton, with additional choreography by Stephany Godino, the complete original 1911 version of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, “Petrushka,” will be presented on March 31 at 8 p.m., in Molloy College’s new Madison Theatre.
One of the great masterworks of modern ballet theater, "Petrushka" is the story of a Russian carnival puppet smitten with the love of the carnival's ballerina. The orchestra will also perform the music of Alexander Borodin, with some of the most memorable melodies in all of romantic music.
Among the featured performers are principal ballerina Anna Liceica, dancing the role of the ballerina. She was formerly with New York City Ballet and an American Ballet Theater soloist, and is currently its Principal Guest Artist. She has performed in all the great classics and received the Diagilev Award and the Silver Medal at the third Rudolf Nureyev International Ballet Competition, as well as The Viewers' Choice Award at the Maya Plisetskaya International Ballet Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The starring role of Petrushka will be danced by Matthew Powell, who received his training on scholarship with the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. As a professional, he has performed with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera.
Featured as the Moor will be Jace Coronado who was most recently seen in the Big League National Tour of “Guys and Dolls,” where he performed the role of Liver Lips Louis and was a featured dancer. His Broadway debut was made in Dece
The 65-member orchestra is one of the premiere orchestras of Long Island. Currently celebrating its 27th season, it is an associate of the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts and is based in Rockville Centre.
