"It's very exciting and very unexpected," said Abrams.
She has been to several championships, including two State Class A titles during her four years as a starter on the team. Abrams has also played for the Rockville Centre Soccer Club and hopes to continue playing in college. She is the only All-American team member from Nassau County. In her career she has had 24 goals and 20 assists.
Abrams credits the team, her coaches and the RVC Soccer Club with helping her become an All-American. In fact, she thinks the whole Cyclones team should have received the honor. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them pushing me," she said.
The All-American team is invited to a convention in January in St. Louis. There Abrams will receive a plaque and some free gifts from the sponsor, Adidas.
With this kind of success, it might be assumed that all her time is devoted to soccer, but that is not true. Abrams is also on several basketball teams including the one at South Side High School, and she has been on varsity track for all four years of her high school career.
Besides sports, she is involved in many activities at school including spirit week, the Red and Blue competition and the school yearbook as editor of the color photo section. A true scholar athlete, Abrams is also part of the rigorous International Baccalaureate program.
This All-County, All-Long Island, All-State, All-American soccer player is also generous with what little time she has left, volunteering in several capacities. Abrams is part of Athletes Helping Athletes, Camp Anchor for handicap children and the Hewitt Drama Club. She is one of the participants in the Students Helping Older People program, which involves food shopping for the homebound elderly every weekend.
"Christine is a true leader in every sense of the word," said South Side High School Athletic Director Michael Heller. "She is a great role model on and off the field."
