West Hempstead Board of Education will hold its business meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chestnut Street board room. There will be a math educational presentation.
Malverne Village Board meets on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall on Church Street.
The Mothers of Malverne or MOM will meet on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Malverne Village Hall. The group, which includes members from Malverne, Lynbrook, Franklin Square, Valley Stream, Rockville Centre and Oceanside, meets monthly from September to June to provide a social and support network for mothers of young children as well as events for kids. The Laugh for a Cure 2 fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will be on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., at the Pompei Restaurant in West Hempstead. The Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a celebratory dinner for both its members, benefactors and the community on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lynbrook Elks on Hempstead Avenue in Lynbrook. Cocktails will start at 7 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing. Everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are $25 and all payments should be made payable to the MVAC. The MVAC will also be distributing a commemorative sponsorship book, which will be distributed at the dinner. Margot Leverett and The Klezmer Mountain Boys will be performing at The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8:30 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information, call (516) 481-7448. The Malverne Merchants and Professional Association will have its annual Merchant Fair on Sunday, Sept. 14 on Hempstead Avenue in Malverne. There will be dance, pony rides and music for entertainment as well as fitness and self defense demonstrations throughout the day. This event will be held in conjunction with the association’s Classic Car Show located next to Connolly Station. This is a day where businesses can advertise through their promotional materials and giveaways. Eddie Costello’s Trash or Treasure Antiques Roadshow will be on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. Do you have something that is old, unusual, perhaps even bizarre? This is a unique program to help you learn how to detect the old and recognize the valuable. The first 40 people to sign-up may bring one item for a free appraisal. The program ends with a "Blue Ribbon Award" presented to the patron that brought the most unique antique or collectible of the show.
Computer 1st Grade for Grownups will be on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. In this workshop you will learn how to work with text including inputting, inserting, moving and erasing, learn basic word processing skills, understand commands and dialog boxes, and setup and create an email. There is a $5 fee during sign-up. No cash will be accepted.

Homework help is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children in grades K-12 are invited to attend instructional sessions with New York State certified teachers. Classes in math, science, social studies and English/Language Arts are provided. Registration is required.

Basic Electric for Homeowners class will be on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will review electrical safety practices, proper use of mult-meter and how to remove and replace a switch and receptacle. GFCI’s will also be introduced and participants will be able to check the basic before calling an electrician.

The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead’s Nursery School enrollment for the 2008 –09 school year is now under way. The center offers a program enriched with both Judaic and secular studies as well as guest educators and special programs. Special incentives are now being offered for early enrollment.
