Long Beach Medical Center receives state funding for technology expansion

Long Beach Medical Center is one of 26 regional health care networks across New York state that will share $52.9 million in grant awards as part of New York's Health Information Technology (HIT) initiative. An award amount of $733,000 will enable Long Beach Medical Center to establish an information technology system between the Medical Center, physician offices, and select area nursing facilities. The HIT initiative provides for the sharing of electronic patient data among health care providers via highly secured server networks to better ensure that appropriate medical care is delivered to patients. The electronic patient medical records would include reports on past diagnoses, surgical procedures, imaging studies, allergies, prescription drug history and laboratory information, among other key data. Patients will have greater access to their own health records so that they can make better informed health care decisions in consultation with their doctors Recent advances include an $8-million hospital-wide information system that provides for the electronic transmission of medical information throughout the Medical Centerís hospital, skilled nursing facility, home health care agency and outpatient programs. New web-based technology allows physicians to access diagnostic imaging scans and reports from their homes and offices, and over $4-million in software upgrades were made in the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
