Alan remembers his dad frequently calling him "a screw-up," emphasizing to him that "you'll never amount to anything," and that "you can't trust anyone."People like Alan are in dire need of creating a new set of affirmations for themselves. But even people like Roberta need to update their affirmations as their life situations change. The best affirmations are pithy, punchy statements that are easy to remember. When you're feeling overwhelmed, lazy or frenzied, they can bolster your self-confidence and motivate you to act in your own interests. Here are a few of my favorite affirmations: When you're feeling overwhelmed:
n
You can't do it all. Do what is most pressing for each day. Then, let go.
n
Good enough is good enough.
n
If you're too busy for those you love, you're too busy.
n
Aim for accomplishment, not perfection.
n
On a busy day, taking a few moments to do nothing at all is a virtue. When you're feeling lazy:
n
Dreams do not come true without taking action.
n
It's often easier to do something than to explain why you didn't do it.
n
Regrets for what we didn't do in life are often the deepest.
n
Living inside your comfort zone can be boring. Take a step outside. Notice what's interesting.
n
Being unable to make a decision is, in fact, making a decision. When you're feeling frenzied:
n
Do what's important, before it becomes essential.
n
Do what's essential before it becomes an emergency.
n
Crisis-making is optional, not mandatory.
n
Singing out loud beats screaming out loud.
n
Work with the people in your life, not against them.s
