A spokesman at the Nassau County District Attorney's office said that Lacey has been charged with a 14-count indictment. The charges include eight counts of murder in the second degree with two different theories of the murder statute — four counts of depraved indifference to human life and four counts of committing an intentional arson. There are two counts of murder being charged for each victim. Lacey was also charged with five counts of arson in the second degree and one count of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
Lacey, a first-year volunteer at the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, was accused of dousing the only stairwell in a two-story N. Lawrence building with gasoline, setting a fire and heading to the firehouse hoping to respond to the scene and save those inside the building, according to police. Detectives on the case referred to this as a "hero complex." Lacey was arrested on arson and murder charges on March 20 for this incident.
According to District Attorney Kathleen Rice, Lacey is facing a maximum of 25 years to life in prison, if convicted of the charges. The charges are only accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty, the District Attorney's office said. There is no scheduled date for Lacey's arraignment on the indictment.
