Victor Abrams, a grandfather of two, dropped his son's fiancee off at a Valley Stream gym on March 28 and has not been seen since. He had been in the early stages of Alzheimer's for months but continued to drive, said his only child, son Jonathan. "It's getting real frustrating right now," Jonathan said.
The morning of his disappearance, Abrams was traveling in a driving rainstorm. His son worries that the weather may have disoriented and confused his father, who first began exhibiting symptoms of Alz-heimer's about three months ago. Jonathan said his father has driven regularly since the diagnosis, but stays local, limiting his driving to Long Beach for a walk or to visit friends in Garden City and Manhasset. Jonathan said his father has not used his credit card since his disappearance nor has he made any bank transactions.
Detective Al Brandel of the Missing Persons section of the Nassau County Police Department said the investigation is still ongoing, and he does not suspect foul play. "If that were the case, we wouldn't have it now - Homicide would," he said.
Abrams is 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 140 pounds, with a horseshoe of white hair and a white beard. He was last seen driving a 1997 Chrysler with New York license plates CEC 2157 and wearing a tan, long-sleeved sweater, a blue vest, black pants with a brown belt, brown shoes, a brown waist-length jacket, black gloves and a black hat.
