Valley Stream's Andrew Fatscher American Legion Post 854 held a special party last Saturday night, September 23, to mark the 80th Anniversary of the American Legion. The evening included a moment of silence for American prisoners of war and those missing in action, and special recognition of George Erfurt, with 56 years of membership in the American Legion.
The Andrew Fatscher Post facility was filled to capacity, with fine food and, more importantly, camaraderie formed through shared service. The Ladies Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion helped make the evening possible, and Commander Richard O'Hara made special note of the generous participation in the event.
Commander O'Hara also thanked Fran Lawlor, Kevin Lawlor, Jerry Hahn, Walter Fatscher, Sr., Jack Sharkey, Ed and Fran Marsh, Tom Maulik, Jeanne O'Hara, Ron and Fran Sabo, Pat and Lou Massa, Richard Menzies, Violet Krawzcuk, and Josephine Martorano "for making this night a special occasion."
On Monday, Valley Stream Mayor Edward Cahill offered his thoughts on the event to The Herald: "As we celebrate the 75h anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of Valley Stream, I have more occasion than usual to visit many wonderful community, religious and service groups in town.
"I am always impressed with the diverse and rich history that is so much a part of life in Valley Stream. Many of these outstanding institutions pre-date the Village's incorporation. In fact, this past Saturday night, my wife Mary Ann and I enjoyed a great evening as we participated in the 80th anniversary celebration of the American Legion's Andrew Fatscher Post #854.
"A fixture at Roosevelt Avenue and Legion Place since 1947, the post was actually established in 1920. It was named for Andrew W. Fatscher, A.S.N. 217104, who died in the line of duty during World War I.
"The post has been civic minded from the start. It co-sponsors the Village's annual Memorial Day parade. It was a vital force in Valley Stream's hosting of a half-sized mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Its members have participated in the Village's Adopt-A-Block beautification efforts. Its work on behalf of our armed forces during times of war has been momentous.
"I am always proud and honored to serve the residents of Valley Stream as mayor. It is a great pleasure to combine such opportunities with the chance to thank those individuals and organizations that make such a significant contribution to life in Valley Stream. As I did at their official celebration, I will once again, here, say on behalf of all of Valley Stream, thank you and bless you to members past and present of Andrew Fatscher Post #854. Happy anniversary! We are forever grateful."
