Andre Darnell Mitchell was killed in Iraq on July 31 in a Humvee accident. The 25-year-old Army PSC specialist enlisted in February 2006 and trained for 14 months in Fort Hood, Texas. He left for Mazul, Iraq, last November.
Mitchell attended the Clara H. Carlson School in Elmont and graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. He was a member of the African American Student Association while enrolled at Nassau Community College, and represented the school at several national conferences.
Mitchell leaves behind his mother, Yasmin Patterson, and brother Malique, who recently graduated from the Alden Terrace elementary school. "He was a hero to me," Malique said. "He would say something to me, offer me advice, and I wouldn't understand what he was saying, but later on he was always right. He would smile at me and say, 'I told you so.'"
