The village Electric Department reported two service disruptions, one on Cleveland Avenue, and the other on Brower Avenue. Fifteen homes were without electricity for about two hours.
Downed trees at Oxford Road and Park Lane were quickly cleared by the village Department of Public Works. Crews also had to pick up and remove various tree limbs that fell in numerous other locations throughout the village.
But the major impact of that storm, which caused significant damage and disruption to the entire region, was flooding. The N 14 Rockville Centre Loop bus was forced to make several detours to avoid submerged intersections at Lakeview and Long Beach Road, where the Nassau County storm drain system backed up, at Maple Avenue and Long Beach Road and at Brower and Maple avenues. Homes near the corners of Lehigh and Beverly and Sherman and Capitolian also briefly turned into waterfront property during that storm, which brought at least the third torrential rainfall of the summer.
The rainstorm two days later, on Aug. 10, while heavy at times, and producing a steady rain that fell for hours onto ground that was saturated from all the recent rain, did not cause any major problems in the village.
