Bossart said she felt that outgoing member Kevin Ryan deserved another term. Ryan completed a five-year term in July, and continued to serve on the board until this month while Mayor Eugene Murray contemplated whom to appoint to the board.
Rinn said he has tried to make being cooperative a hallmark of his term on the board, but said the quickness of SchenoneÕs appointment took him by surprise and that he was disappointed in the process.
Deputy Mayor Wayne Lipton also expressed surprise, but said he supported the appointment and thought Schenone would be a welcome addition to the board.
Like Rinn and Bossart, Ryan is a member of the Concerned Citizens Party. The mayor and the rest of the board, Lipton and Jim Sutton, are members of the Home Rule Party.
Ryan will now serve as an alternate to the board, sitting in for hearings when one of the five board members is not available.
Zoning Board chair Jeff Greenfield defended the mayorÕs appointment, saying that as a landscaper and business owner, Schenone, of Schenone Landscape Contractors on North Long Beach Road, will add a needed dimension to the board. Greenfield said that although it was his pleasure to work with Ryan, there were too many lawyers on the board.
He also pointed out that this is not the first time a longtime zoning board member hasnÕt been reappointed even though he expressed a desire to stay. Greenfield was replaced in 1999 when Concerned Citizens held the majority on the board. He was reappointed when Home Rule won back the majority.
Schenone has a long history of volunteer work in the village. He helped with the development of the Sept. 11 memorial on the Village Green and with expansion of the Sandel Senior Center.
