Senior citizens who call Lynbrook their home have seen a lot in their time. The country has certainly gone through its share of changes over the past several decades, including constitutional amendments and technological advances, but one thing that has remained the same, especially in Lynbrook, is the sense of community.
Community members help each other out and work together for what’s best for the greater good. On May 30, that ideal was in full effect as Village Car Service treated members of the Lynbrook Senior Club to a free lunch.
David O’Neill, operation manager at Village Car Service, picked up pizza pies, which were provided by Gino’s Pizzeria on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook, and delivered them to Greis Park Recreation Center. More than two-dozen seniors enjoyed their lunch and socialized with one another. Members of the Lynbrook Recreation Department set up tables and chairs and served pizza.
“It’s important to help out seniors,” O’Neill said, “because eventually we’re all going to become seniors and hopefully when we get to be that age someone will be around to help us.”
Kathy Aprile, president of the Lynbrook Senior Club, said she is glad to see people giving back to senior citizens. She recently went around the village asking businesses for gift card donations and was pleased with the feedback.
“The importance of giving back to the seniors is some seniors have nothing in their lives,” Aprile said. “This is their enjoyment. They need it.”
The event coincided with Senior Citizens Month and the one-year anniversary of Village Car Service. O’Neill added that Village Car Service provides free transportation to seniors within the village limits on Wednesdays.
“The more you give the more you get,” he said.
