Some folks seem to have an abundance of "everything," yet they still complain and are dissatisfied about whatever happens. They just don't seem to pay attention to or appreciate any of the joys of life. Others, in contrast, have an abundance of "real" problems, (i.e. illness), yet they can be very thankful, even grateful about both the big as well as the little things in life that are pleasurable and inspirational.
Thanksgiving, of course, is the perfect occasion for all of us to think about what we are
grateful for. And many people do just that. But what if, instead of just going through the ritual, you did it with real meaning? With creativity? With laughter? With quirkiness? What if your Thanksgiving attitude was contagious and everyone around you caught it? Would that be a good thing or a terrific thing?
As I think about the things that I am grateful for, there are many that are obvious-family, friends, good health, peace, prosperity, success, etc. etc. But, since one of the things I am appreciative of is my increased ability to take risks, to be impulsive, to not think so much, I have decided to just go with the flow. To that end, I am writing about the first seven things that pop into my mind for which I am thankful. Here they are:
1. I am so thankful that no matter who wins our country's presidential election, it's going to be okay. No Nazis, no fascists, no dictator will overthrow our government. Our deep commitment to a peaceful transfer of power and to a democratic form of government will continue.
2. I am appreciative of the abundance of entertainment that is at my fingertips--excellent movies, books, computer sites, TV programs, music, magazines. I just have to reach out and touch one of these things. And if they're not touching me back, poof, I'm gone and there's another form of entertainment just waiting for me. Isn't that amazing?
3. I am constantly fascinated by the richness and beauty of the English language and extremely grateful for the wonder of a thesaurus. Those days when I need to write but I'm feeling dull and dim, the thesaurus is always there as an aid to get me going.
4. I am grateful that I have learned to trust my gut instinct after years of not having the guts to trust it. I don't have to defend why I know what I know. When my instinct is right, I just know it.
5. I really like that Itgen's in Valley Stream still knows what an egg cream is and will make me one that's "not too sweet."
6. I think it's terrific that I was born a "middle child." Don't believe the bad press regarding middle kids. From our very earliest days, we have a foot in two worlds, making us more aware, sensitive and patient to different perspectives and viewpoints of others.
7. I hold dear every single visit I have ever made to a spa! Those people really know about relaxation and pampering! They treat you as honored guests and guess what, I believe them!
Well now it's your turn! Let your juices flow. Write down seven (or more) things about life that you are excited about or amazed that they even exist! Appreciating these happenings or situations are the key to true feelings of joy, satisfaction and gratitude.
Hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving!
