The guards were making a currency delivery at the bank at 9:15 a.m. when the robbery occurred. One of the guards was about to enter the bank with two bags of money on a hand truck when a man holding the bank door open yelled to another man, who grabbed the guard from behind in a bear hug, according to police. One of the robbers unsuccessfully attempted to take the guard's gun. The guard was punched in the face, and the first subject then grabbed one of the bags of money.
The robbers -- described as two while males with stocky builds, approximately 6 feet to 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds, wearing shorts, white low-top sneakers, white socks and blue baseball caps -- fled on foot and were last seen running eastbound on Sunrise Highway.
The guard, a 42-year-old man, had a sore face but refused medical treatment at the scene. The other guard was not hurt.
Police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information concerning the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
