Holy services. Passover seders. Church fund-raiser. St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church is holding a rock n' roll oldies fund-raiser April 30 at Kellenberg Memorial High School. Open house. High school students, transfer students and people changing careers are invited to attend the open house at Nassau Community College Sunday, May 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Building Field House. Patriotic program. Students from Meadowbrook Elementary School will be at the Salisbury Senior Center May 9 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a discussion about the meaning of Memorial Day. After the discussion they will be making a Memorial Day wreath with the seniors.

Educational forum. CHADD of Nassau County is holding its next educational forum Monday, May 16 from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the East Meadow Jewish Center, 1400 Prospect Ave. The discussion will be on anger in children.


Day at the Races. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is holding its third annual Day at the Races fund-raiser at Belmont Park Saturday, June 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. $55 for adults, $25 for children under 13. Each guest will receive reserved parking, clubhouse admission, handicapping seminar, private betting windows and barbecue lunch. Nine exciting races. Door prizes and raffles. Race sponsorship $50. Kiwanis meetings. The East Meadow Kiwanis, a chapter of the international charity organization, is always looking for new members. Those interested in joining are invited to come down to its meetings. The group meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Empress Diner, 2490 Hempstead Turnpike. The East Meadow Kiwanis is the largest Kiwanis chapter in the state.


Knights of Pythias. The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. The Knights of Pythias is one of the most active fraternal organizations, chartered by the United States Congress. This non-sectarian organization serves the community through a number of altruistic endeavors, including food baskets for the needy, donations to charitable organizations, anti-drug programs, and a host of other activities. Library Events





On exhibit. Pieces from the East Meadow Public Library's annual community juried art show will run through April in the downstairs community room.


Laughs at library. Need a good laugh? Come to the library Thursday, April 21 at 1 p.m. for the ongoing series "Laughs at the Library." Mark Brier, a standup comic, will offer tips on how to tell hilarious jokes. All are welcome to come down to perform or listen.


Poetry performance. Though regarded as one of the most famous artists, Michelangelo also wrote over 300 sonnets, madrigals and poems. A performance of his work will be held Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.


Bus trip to Philly. Tickets are available for the bus trip to see the Salvadore Dali exhibit in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the only venue in the country to exhibit this Dali retrospective. The bus will leave the library at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 22 and will make its first stop at the Reading Terminal Market, a market place filled with restaurants, food stands and Pennsylvania Dutch merchants. Cost for the bus, museum and gratuities is $65. Tickets do not include lunch. Register in the public relations office.


Boating class. In preparation for the 2005 boating season, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering several classes of its "America's Boating" course at the library. The course will teach how to handle a boat properly and safely, and meets NYS jetski requirements. Most boat and PWC insurance compaines offer a 10 to 20 percent discount for completing the course and test. It costs $50 to take the 8-hour class, which includes a book with CD, test, certificate and ID card. The next class is on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Mammo van. The Nassau University Medical Center mammography van will be outside the East Meadow Public Library Tuesday, April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. In order to receive a mammography, it must be one year since the date of your last one. The van accommodates 15 screenings and appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Road trip. Tickets are available for the library's trip to the Caramoor's House Museum in Katonah, NY, where 20 rooms feature eastern, medieval and renaissance artifacts. Tickets cost $65 and include transportation, lunch and gratuities. The trip is on Wednesday, May 18. The bus will leave the library at 8:15 a.m.

Support Groups





Alzheimer's support. The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at

Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Alanon meetings held Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.


Education and support groups for men with prostate cancer are being held at Nassau University Medical Center. Meetings are the first Wednesday of the month.


Mothers helping mothers. The Sunrise Mother's Center, a non-profit, non-sectarian, member-run organization of mothers helping mothers. The center is a place for mothers to meet and develop new or existing skills. Discussion groups, committee work and special events, as well as a Time for Two program for children ages 12 months to 3 years old and their caregivers are also available.
