Artistic endeavorsPortrait of a Lynbrook art class

Posted
Led by artist, teacher and self-proclaimed "spiritual healer" Joan Lazarus of Lynbrook, the class allows anyone, not only senior citizens, to express themselves through watercolor and canvas. Most of the students, however, are retired men and women.
Mike Galgano of Lynbrook, a former New York City homicide detective, is finishing up a colorful painting of Disneyworld. "it's for my first great-grandchild, expected in November," said Galgano. "My son went to Disneyworld and bought a beach towel with the picture on it. I made one for him, and then my granddaughter-in-law asked if I would make one for the new baby." Galgano didn't start painting until he retired from the police department in 1989. "I get a lot out of this class," he said. "The teacher is very cordial and easy to work with."
"I love to see each person discover their individuality," said Lazarus. "Through art, I want them to reach their potential and discover what their essence is as a person."
She says that a peson's ideas, values, points of view all come together in their art. "The marrying of technique and self expression is what creates their artwork."
The art class will begin again in September. For more information, call the Lynbrook Recreation Department at (516) 599-8000.
