Affordable housing. In an effort to promote an awareness of the need for more affordable housing on Long Island, the Affordable Housing Coalition will host a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Parish in North Merrick.

Penny auction. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Mother Seton 2413, will hold its annual Penny Auction on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore. Street renaming. The Bellmore Fire Department will host a street-renaming ceremony to honor the late Adam Rand, a local firefighter who died trying to save lives on Sept. 11. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Eastern Avenue and Merrick Road. For more information, call (516) 661-3027.

Halloween parade. The Bellmore Village Merchants Association is sponsoring its annual Halloween parade on Saturday, Oct. 30, rain or shine. Participants will meet at 11:50 a.m. at the Bellmore firehouse on Pettit Avenue, just north of the railroad station. At noon, children will parade through the Bellmore Village. After the procession, the children may trick-or-treat at all business displaying a pumpkin on their windows. For additional information, call April Cannon at (516) 785-5842.

Candidates night. The Bellmore Committeeman's Council of the Bellmore Republican Committee will hold its annual Meet the Candidates Night on Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Masonic Hall on Bedford Avenue and Square Place at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and $20 for seniors, and may be obtained by calling (516) 783-0330.

Discount books. The Bellmore Knights of Columbus is selling its 2005 entertainment discount coupon books. Supplies are limited, and price of the book is $20. For more information, call John Weber at (516) 223-5982.

Election Day drive. The Bellmore Knights of Columbus Council is organizing an Election Day voter turnout drive by providing transportation to polling places on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Anyone who needs a ride to the polls should call (516) 221-7875.

Tea party. The Bellmore Presbyterian church will host a Tea Party on Saturday, Nov. 6. The event is an endeavor to bring families together and build a better community through an afternoon of socializing, entertainment and refreshments. BJC Hazak programs. The Hazak Chapter of the Bellmore Jewish Center has announced its fall 2004 programs, and extends an invitation to the community to attend the following presentation. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m., Bud Livingston, lecturer and teacher on the Civil War, will speak on "American Jewry and the Civil War." The programs are presented at the Bellmore Jewish Center and refreshments will be served. A $3 contribution is suggested, and reservations are required. Commemorative journal. The Long Island Crisis Center is publishing its annual commemorative journal for its volunteers. The center is celebrating 33 years of selfless service and is looking for interested businesses or individuals to place ads in this year's edition. The money raised by the ads will be used to support client services, including depression, isolation, fear, substance abuse, teen suicide and family discord counseling. Collection drive. Danielle Koebel, of Bellmore, is putting together a collection drive called Project: Thank the Troops! According to Koebel, Marines and soldiers in Iraq need the following items: gum, barbecue sauce, pillows, canned foods, socks, foot powder, lip balm, sunscreen, baby wipes, disposable cameras, CDs and DVDs, stamps, envelopes and boxes to ship items in. These items can be dropped at 114 Ralph Ave. in Bellmore. Money donations for shipping are also appreciated. For more information, call (516) 679-8992.

On display. The Bellmore library will have photographs by Bellmore residents Jerry Kraus and Emily Schreiber on display through October.

College programs. All college-bound students can register for the following programs. "Everything you need to know about college, and shouldn't be afraid to ask", with Leslie Bilawsky. The program offers an insight to the the college selection and admission process. Trick or treat. Boys and girls of all ages are invited to trick-or-treat at the North Bellmore Library on Friday, Oct. 29, and choose a non-edible treat. Costumes are not necessary.

Buying a computer. Ceil Hearn of Sharper Training Solutions will be at the library's community room on Monday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. to discuss selecting the best computer for a consumer's needs. She will talk about hardware and software, clarify jargon and explain the pros and cons of the various systems. This is a perfect way for prospective computer buyers to make an informed purchase.

Book discussion. "The Black Madonna" by Louisa Ermelino will be discussed on Monday, Nov.15. The novel takes readers to Little Italy in New York City during the 1940s and '50s to meet the women of Spring Street and their families. The novel offers remarkable truths about Italian-American women.
