Will it be a long winter or an early spring? Find out when Malverne Mel prognisticates on what the season holds, Monday, Feb. 2,
6:30 a.m.
Sponsored by Herald Community Newspapers and the Village of Malverne, the celebrated groundhog will appear in front of his fans and the community, at the 9th Annual Groundhog Day Ceremony.
The early morning Groundhog Day celebration has been a yearly event in Malverne since 1996. Malverne Mel boasts an impressive track record. Until 2001, Mel accurately predicted future long-range forecasts. Unfortunately, in February 2001 Mel disagreed with fellow prognosticators, informing residents that spring would come early that year. A few weeks later, the metropolitan area received some nasty winter weather that tarnished Mel's forecasting record. In 2OO2 and 'O3, Mel was back on track, and Long Islanders eagerly await to find out what he predicts this winter will bring.
Join Malverne Mayor Anthony Panzarella, known throughout the area as a fluent speaker of "groundhogese," and other dignitaries for the celebration of our favorite groundhog. It takes place at the Gazebo, adjacent to Malverne LIRR station, corner of Hempstead Ave. and Church St.
