Extreme sports

Nationally ranked pros and amateurs of extreme sports and various music bands are getting together for the Panasonic Shockwave Tour at Jones Beach from August 24 to 26. The event will feature several competitions, including the "King of Dirt Pro-Am," a BMX face-off with aerial flips, tricks and specialized moves, and "Razor Rage," a micro-scooter battle of tricks, jumps, and freestyle moves. Ashcan artists

Hoboes, sweatshops, beer halls and even garbage cans are the subject of the exhibit "Old New York and Artists of the Period: 1900-1941," opening August 19 at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Works by artists of the Ashcan School and Realism, such as Reginald Marsh, Robert Henri, John Sloan, and George Luks, will be on view.
