One smooth singer

Johnny Mathis, known for his "satin smooth" vocals, has picked up more than 60 gold and platinum album s since he entered the music scene in the mid-fifties. Hear him sing in person at the Westbury Music Fair on March 2 and 3. Mathis will perform some show tunes from his recent release, "Mathis on Broadway," as well as pieces from his 1960 landmark album "Rhythms and Ballads of Broadway." Frank McCourt's in town

He won't be talking about his pulitzer-prize-winning memoir, "Angela's Ashes." Instead, Frank McCourt, a former New York City high school teacher, will serve as one of speakers at Hofstra's "Irish Potato Famine" conference. The event, geared toward teachers or others in education administration, will discuss the a new curriculum that has been developed to teach about the Great Irish Famine in NYS public schools.
