A different kind of soap opera


Verdi's "Aida," performed by the opera company Teatro Lirico D'Europa, is coming to the Tilles Center on Friday, Feb. 2. Verdi wrote the opera in 1870, to commemorate the opening of the Suez Canal. The story takes place during the Age of the Pharaohs in Egypt, as the country is preparing to defend itself against the Ethiopian invasion. Aida is an Egyptian slave, Radames is an Egyptian warrior in love with Aida, and Amneris is an Egyptian princess who loves Radames. Flights of fancy

Actor George Takei, known as Mr. Sulu of the TV series "Star Trek", will be narrating the Long Island Philharmonic's Feb. 17 concert titled "Flights of Fancy." The symphony will feature a music based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," where Takei lend his voice to several characters. Hear also the theme song from the "Star Trek" series, John William's "The Phantom Menace", and more. Long Island Philharmonic, The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Long Island University, C.W.
