You ask a good question. You deserve a good answer. But first, I must tell readers of this column that I am often asked if I make this stuff up. This question, like many, was received and forwarded by my editors who, I'm sure, got as much of a laugh as I did.

The height of fences in most local communities is regulated by zoning code ordinances. In most cases, a fence 6 feet tall is permitted around the perimeter of the rear yard area but can only be 6 feet tall up to the point of the rear building line of adjacent dwellings. This means that the fence cannot be placed closer to the front of the house than the back corners of your house, since yours is the adjacent property. A zoning variance is required for the fence to be 6 feet tall in a side yard.

You may send a letter to your local building department, requesting them to "look into" the matter. Last year, a couple contacted me because a neighbor was showing pornographic films that their young children could easily see by looking into the neighbor's windows. They placed a 6-foot-tall fence between the houses and the neighbor filed a complaint. The couple received a summons, had to appear in court and had to remove the fence, replacing it with a 4-foot-tall fence after losing their case before their board of zoning appeals.

You may follow a similar procedure but, if you hear helicopters flying overhead, searchlights shining down from the heavens, and a knock at your trailer door, it wasn't me who forwarded your letter for fingerprinting to the local authorities. Since you say you follow my advice every week, I will offer you some ideas. Find another hobby, point and click online, rent a movie, or get out more often.

That way you won't be home when they come for you. Good luck.
