The Hempstead Town Board will meet on Tuesday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Nathan Bennett Pavilion, One Washington St, Hempstead.


The Malverne Village Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 99 Church St.


Neighborhood Watch. Malverne Neighborhood Watch meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Malverne Public Library. For more information, call Joe Lanzetta, president, at 599-2343.

Religious Services and events





Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Avenue in Hempstead, holds Friday night services on the third Friday of each month at 7:45 p.m. Services are followed by a program/speaker and Oneg Shabbat. Weekly Saturday services are held at 9 a.m. and followed by Kiddish and discussion. For further information regarding services, please call the Temple at 794-0352 or 594-1393.


West Hempstead JCC. The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, 711 Dogwood Avenue, holds daily Minyan services, Mondays through Thursdays at 6:40 a.m.and 8 p.m.; on Fridays at 6:40 a.m. and candle lighting; and on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.


Malverne Jewish Center. 1 Norwood Ave. Monday Minyans are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday morning services start at 9:30 a.m.

Thrift Shops


Our Lady of Lourdes Church's thrift shop, located at Park Boulevard and Sheehy Place in Malverne, is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on the first Saturdays of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information call (516) 599-1269.


Malverne Community Presbyterian Church's thrift shop is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the church hall on Nottingham Road.

Scholarship Fund


The West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church on Nassau Boulevard. The slate of officers for the 2005/06 year will be voted on. Interested residents of West Hempstead and Island Park are cordially invited to join in the meeting to discuss the scholarship drive, which is supported by tax deductible contributions from individuals. In 2005, the fund awarded six students $2,000 each.


Long-term care seminar Woodmere Rehabilitation and Health Care Center is sponsoring a free seminar at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13. This program will be presented by Anne M. Littwin, Esq. and Jason E. Epstein, Esq. in Woodmere Rehab's recreation room at 121 Franklin Place in Woodmere.The workshop will provide an overview of proper advanced planning techniques, so that one does not have to deplete their entire life savings paying for long-term care. This workshop reviews the options available to ensure that one's home is protected from escalating long-term care costs, and will include a brief discussion of wills and trusts, which can maximize the assets one leaves to family and ensure that loved ones are cared.


Pasta at Pompei The Kiwanis Club of West Hempstead will be sponsoring their 10th annual pasta dinner at The Pompei Restaurant, 401 Hempstead Ave., West Hempstead on Tuesday, September 13, at 7 P.M. The unlimited dinner buffet consists of salad, various pastas, dessert and coffee.  There will also be door prizes and raffles with some great prizes. In addition, there will be entertainment while you are enjoying your dinner. A portion of the money raised will be used to support local charities.

Books for veterans


The Friends of the Malverne Public Library are turning to church groups, civic and service associations and citizens to be a part of their annual Books for Veterans program. For nearly 35 years they have provided paperback books and magazine subscriptions to hospitalized veterans in nearby V.A. hospitals. Because the Friends' coordinate the program themselves, every dollar contributed is used for the actual purchase of books and magazine subscriptions. Basic Geneology Research


Not sure how to start researching your U.S. relatives? This workshop will explain basic genealogy research skills such as using databases to find Cencus records, getting copies of vital records, such as births, deaths and marriages, where to find Social Security records and searching naturalization databases. Handouts will cover current books, software programs and Web sites as welll as a listing of local genealogy societies. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept.15 at 7 p.m.


Mindfulness: A Meditation Technique Meditation is being discussed and practiced in more and more places, from doctors' waiting rooms to classrooms. The daily practice of meditation has been shown to reduce stress, spark creativity and provide spiritual enrichment. Constance Hallinan Lagan, noted author and speaker, will hold a presentation at the library explaining the virtues of meditation. The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.


A Sunday With Michelle The library will be hosting a concert featuring Michelle, daughter of Jimmy Moore, on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. Admission is free to both residents and non-residents. However, the library askes all attendees to arrive at least 15 minutes before showtime.

Fall Gardening: Putting Your Garden to Bed Garden cleanup and winter preparation are important to ensure good sanitation and to reduce pest and disease problems. Learn about minor bulbs, composting and mulching, as well as how to reduce freezing and thawing during an informational session at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Registration is required.


Independent Film On Friday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., the library will be showing Agata and the Storn, a swirl of pop-art color, madcap magic and the bittersweet call of life and love. Directed by Silvio Sodini, the cast of characters in this ensemble cmedy creates suspense, laughter and a sense of tenderness. When Agata (Licia Maglietta), the popular bookshop proprietor and dispenser of sunny wisdom is suddenly wooed by a man almost half her age, her electricity hits high voltage. The film is in Italian with English subtitles and runs 118 minutes.


Defensive Driving Class The library will host a defensive driving course on Saturday, Sept. 24 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The course is open to drivers of all ages. The registration fee is $35 and must be paid by check. No cash will be accepted. There is no phone registration. If you can't come to the library to register, a family member of friend may register for you. Registration is going on now and is open to Malverne cardholders first. If any spaces remain, non cardholders may register beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 6.


Working with Your Digital Photos The library will host an informational session on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 2 p.m. -4 p.m. The course if for anyone who has a idigital camera but doesn't know how to get the most out of it. Learn how to move images from the camera to the computer, how to organize and edit your pictures.The session will cover using an image editing program that allows the user to resize, crop, adjust light levels and more. Registration is already underway for Malverne cardholders. For non cardholders, registration begins on Thursday, Sept. 8.
