Atlantic Beach shows its mussels

      The odd occurrence has yet to be explained, but Morris Kramer, Atlantic Beach resident and environmentalist, sees it as yet another sign that the bay is dying. The culprits are local sewage treatment plants, according to him.
      Kramer said these plants are pumping too much effluent into the water. The effluent contains nutrients, such as nitrogen, which act as a fertilizer for algae. The algae then uses up more and more oxygen, taking oxygen away from sea-life such as mussels.
