Every year, the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) holds a campaign in order to help older adults stay active, healthy and engaged. While much of the focus is on the “Active Aging Week,” which began on Oct. 23 this year, the ICAA’s campaign extends far beyond one week of active living. The entire six- eek program’s theme was “Exploring Your Community” which is meant to make positive changes in the way older adults all over the world live and are included in society. And for the staff and residents at Atria Tanglewood in Lynbrook, the ICAA’s campaign does a wonderful job of capturing their vision by promoting a better quality lifestyle while still remaining active and engaged, specifically within the surrounding community.
For the past six weeks, 20 residents, whose ages range anywhere from 75 to 97, have not only exercised at least 30 minutes per day, five days a week, but have also taken advantage of all the wonderful resources their community has to offer. For example, Atria Tanglewood is adjacent to the Tanglewood Preserve, which makes their daily walks that much more convenient and beautiful. The residents have also taken advantage of shopping, restaurants, beaches and places of worship. They even were able to have a picnic in Lynbrook’s Greis Park on Sept. 25. All of these outings are able to connect the residents to the community they love. The program came to a close on Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m. with 20 residents of Atria Tanglewood receiving the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+ Award). Special guest, Tom Graham, athletic director of the Lynbrook School District, presented these awards. It was truly a celebration of the active, engaged lives the residents commit themselves to everyday.
