Police said the victim was shot at 2:32 a.m. by a man wielding a handgun. He was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in stable condition. The suspect ran from the scene.
On Monday afternoon, a Rockville Centre village official said that Nassau County police were engaged in a "full court press" and that an active crime scene investigation was under way.
The shooting comes 14 months after David Baez, a resident of Old Mill Court, was shot to death in front of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Centre Avenue. Carl Perryman, Baez's childhood friend, who was arrested in connection with that case, was found not guilty of the murder in April. Another fatal shooting near Old Mill Court, in June 2007, took the life of 42-year-old Mark Davis of Central Islip. There have been no arrests in
that case.
Detectives ask that anyone with information regarding last weekend's shooting call Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous. Check the Herald's Web site, liherald.com, for developments in the case after press time.
