Under the guidance of teacher Don Poland, the students organized and agreed to hold a fundraiser to benefit Herald Hurricane Help, a project whereby the Herald Community Newspapers are joining forces with Island Harvest to assist those recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
On Sunday the students held a car wash in the front oval at the high school on Ocean Avenue, and the response was greater than they dared to hope. Their sudsy event soaked in over $4,000.
"I wanted to help, but I wasn't sure what to do," said tenth-grader Amanda Borgia. "This was a great idea!"
The students scrubbed, washed and dried cars, SUVs, the Lynbrook Fire Department Chief cars and even two East Rockaway fire trucks. There was a steady stream of community support throughout the day and the students have vowed to continue their relief efforts with other fundraising projects. .
"It's simple," said Poland. "People need help and the kids, the school, and the community want to help them."
