Babylon poised for deep playoff run

Babylon’s boys lacrosse team has put together an impressive campaign, compiling a 10-2 record while emerging as one of the top teams in Suffolk County.

Under the guidance of coach John Greany, the Panthers have relied on experienced leadership, balanced scoring, and strong defensive play to build consistency throughout the season.

Babylon’s success has been fueled by a talented senior class that has set the tone both on and off the field.

“So far, so good,” Greany said. “A lot of success has been from the senior class, they’ve been leading the way for us up front.”

Seniors Brady Shaw, Christian Molner, Aiden Winters, and Kai Jankow have all played major roles in the team’s rise.

Shaw has been especially important in the draw circle, leading the team in faceoff wins and helping Babylon control possession during critical stretches of games. Jankow has also stepped up offensively, including a five-point performance in a dominant 15-6 victory over Kings Park on April 20.

The Panthers’ largest winning streak of the season came during a five-game stretch in April that showcased their firepower. Babylon opened the streak with a 16-11 win over Islip before overwhelming Hauppauge 14-2. In that game, Jankow recorded three points while Kevin Bonilla added two points.

It continued rolling with a 17-4 victory over Mattituck and followed it with the convincing win against Kings Park. The streak concluded on April 22 with a 9-6 triumph over Miller Place, powered by a four-point outing from Colin O’Brien.

Babylon’s offense has been one of is biggest strengths all season. Corey Dellafranca leads the Panthers in scoring with 52 points, tallying 31 goals and 21 assists. Meanwhile, Kyle Cabellos has been one of the top playmakers with 14 goals and 33 assists. Bonilla, a junior, has emerged as another offensive catalyst, most notably in Babylon’s recent 12-5 win over Eastport-South Manor on May 7. Bonilla exploded for nine points in the victory, scoring six goals while adding three assists in one of the team’s most dominant individual performances of the season.

The Panthers have also received strong contributions from younger players, including sophomore Shane Sonkin and sophomore goalie Thomas Kenny. The latter has been a key piece defensively, recording 64 saves and giving Babylon a reliable presence in net.

Despite the team’s success and growing momentum, Greany has kept his group focused on the present rather than looking ahead toward playoff seeding.

With strong leadership, explosive offense, and a disciplined mindset, the Panthers appear poised to make noise as the postseason approaches. The final regular-season game comes Wednesday against Center Moriches.

“One day at a time, we aren’t looking too far into the future with playoffs and seeding,” Greany said. “Just like chopping a tree. One chop at a time. Sometimes it can be tough for high school kids to absorb that, but they’ve done a great job with staying on course the whole way.”
