Summer vacation officially came to an end as local students returned to their classrooms on Sept. 5 in what district administrators said was a very smooth school opening.
During a public work session on Aug. 29, schools Superintendent Dr. William Johnson described district-wide enrollment as essentially the same as last year and because of that, there will be no enrollment-based staff changes. He said the district will have 77 sections during the 2012-13 school year. But unanticipated growth in the district’s elementary enrollment surprised administrators and principals, Johnson said. As a result of the new students, the first grade at Covert and the second grade at Riverside were both split into additional sections, while TAs were assigned to the first and second grades n Watson, instead of adding classes there.
