The nationally renowned eatery is bound to attract area residents, as many travel either to Valley Stream or Bellmore to dine at Applebees.
"I think it's great and I'm excited about it," said Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony Santino. "I think it's all part of what the town and the Chamber of Commerce in Baldwin is doing. It's about giving Baldwin an economic shot in the arm. Applebees is nationally known, it's popular wherever it goes and I'm sure it is going to be a vital part of the Baldwin economy going forward because it is the kind of business that attracts people not only from Baldwin, but from neighborhood communities who are looking to a nice family atmosphere."
Ginny Foley, Baldwin Chamber of Commerce co-president, said that the Applebees will add to the economic boom they've received from the Best Buy in that shopping center.
"We're happy," said Foley. "Any national chain that comes to Baldwin, we are very pleased with. We're anxious to work with them and have them join the Chamber."
One employee who was responsible for construction at the location - the former site of Red Lobster - estimated that the building would be finished by Valentine's Day.
Baldwin resident Ryan Rizzuto said he usually goes to Applebees in Bellmore, so the location in Baldwin would definitely be more convenient.
"I'm excited," said Rizzuto. "It will open up our customer base here. Everyone goes to T.G.I. Friday's (in Rockville Centre), so this would be nice."
